Gonzo's Quest Pokies Review

Another NetEnt title, another slightly different spin on the classic 5-reel slots format. Gonzo's Quest is a slick title with great graphics and a fun, if familiar (from slots like Aztec Treasures, Aztec Gold and Wild Aztec), theme.

At 62,500 coins the jackpot isn't quite as hefty as some other NetEnt titles, but an interesting style of play that's reminiscent of certain popular (not to mention extremely addictive!) mobile games means that Gonzo's Quest is still worth a look for sure.

Theme

As the little intro movie tells us, Gonzo's Quest takes place back in the 1500s and focuses on the adventures of a Spanish treasure hunter searching for the lost city of gold. The game features Latin American idols and masks in place of the traditional 9, 10, J, K, Q and A, and it really is lovely to look at.

The animations of the Avalanche function (more on that in the next section) are very smooth and, with Gonzo bumbling around in 3D as the action unfolds, this game looks as good as any out there today. The sound effects and music, featuring pan pipes and crumbling rock, are also top notch.

Gameplay

Gonzo's Quest features five columns and three rows but, because of the way the game plays, we're not sure you could call them reels exactly. Like in the mobile games Bejeweled and Candy Crush, a winning line will dissolve and bring the symbols above them tumbling down.

This also triggers a multiplier of 2x, with successive multipliers of 3x and 5x also possible if more wins are triggered, which is applied to any winning lines that are formed when the symbols above come tumbling down.

NetEnt call this function Avalanche and, although there's no way to use skill to manipulate the outcomes of it, it's still a nice break from the norm and can be a useful way to score some extra wins.

There's also a Free Fall bonus feature, which is equivalent to free spins, but a multiplier is again in play here and all multipliers that kick in as a result of an Avalanche are much improved. It's in this bonus round that players are most likely to win big, so it's difficult to stop a smile from spreading across your face when it comes around.

Added Value

Between the game's unique style of play, the Avalanche feature and its fantastic graphics, NetEnt are definitely onto a winner with this one. Of the recent additions to its library, Gonzo's Quest is one of the more popular and we're not surprised.

While it can be tough to rack up decent multipliers, particularly during standard play, the gameplay of Gonzo's Quest is so compelling that it's difficult to get too angry about that.

The addition of a progressive jackpot, perhaps won using an ancient Aztec wheel of fortune, would definitely be nice but we still highly recommend that Aussie players who are looking for a new game (particularly those who've grown a little weary of standard 5-reel games) give this one a try.

Summary

Gonzo's Quest is such an interesting take on the traditional slots format with its tumbling "reels", if you can even call them that, that it doesn't actually feel like a slot machine at all. And we mean that in a good way! It's a shame that the jackpot is a little bit lacklustre, but the beautiful Aztec theme and 3D graphics mean that this is definitely one of the best looking slots around. Mix in the unique gameplay and you have the recipe for a slot that's a lot of fun to play.
