Thunder King Pokies Review

The thunder king the title of this game refers to isn't the same one who appears in Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck II, even though they may look pretty similar. While those two games feature Thor, this game is all about our man Zeus.

With a solid bonus round featuring wild reels and up to 20 free spins, could the Thunder King be the man to unseat Thor from his pokies throne? Let's find out, shall we?

Theme

Let's get this out of the way right off the bat – Thunder King looks great. While a lot of Aristocrat slots are starting to look tired and dated, Thunder King's graphics are on par with more modern titles.

Reel icons feature Zeus himself, as well as Pegasus, Mount Olympus, a winged helmet and a voluptuous goddess. It's a sight to behold when the Thunder King comes to life in animations and turns entire reels wild or conjures up tornados.

The game falls down a bit when it comes to audio; it uses the same sound effects as most other Aristocrat games and has no background music, only ambient casino sounds. These get repetitive very quickly and we usually end up turning them off.

Gameplay

TThunder King has 30 paylines, which is higher than the 20 or 25 you'll find in lots of Aristocrat titles but not as many as the 243 ways to win offered in the Reel Power system. All in all, it feels about right, and you do usually experience enough decent-sized wins during standard play.

Triggering the bonus round is tricky, as you need to land three scatter symbols on adjacent reels. Personally, we feel like this defeats the whole idea of a "scatter" symbol, but maybe we're just being purists. The bonus round is well worth it when you do manage to trigger it, with between 10 and 20 free spins available depending on how many Mount Olympus symbols you landed to set it off.

There's no multiplier but every time you land a Zeus symbol, he turns an entire reel wild. This is a little frustrating when he turns, say, the fourth and fifth reels wild and it makes no difference to your win but it's an absolute godsend (pun intended) when he turns one or more of the first two reels wild and lands you a load of wins.

Added Value

At just 1,000 coins, the base jackpot is nothing to write home about. However, we get the feeling that this slot isn't really designed for those who like chasing big real cash jackpots.

It seems to us that it's aimed more at players who enjoy smaller, more regular wins and quirky features like sticky wilds and wild reels. There's no denying that it's a lot of fun to play and it's possible to line up some good wins thanks to all the paylines, even during standard play.

It probably won't be a game that you turn to every single time you log on, but we think that plenty of Aussie players will find a place for Thunder King in their regular rotation of games.

Summary

Thanks to its 30 paylines, beautiful graphics, and between 10 and 20 free spins available during the bonus round, Thunder King seems to have all the right ingredients for a great slot experience. Unfortunately, its very low jackpot of just 1,000 coins really lets the game down. The game is low variance, so players who enjoy long sessions might find it appealing, but it's so difficult to trigger the bonus round that even they could be put off. We're sad to say that it's difficult to recommend this game, even despite its good looks, with much enthusiasm.
